The benefits of fruit

Fruit provides a lot of healthy benefits for the body.  People and athletes who include fruit in their diet often have much lower risks of chronic diseases and other ailments.  This is because fruits contain vital nutrients that are essential for the regular maintenance and development of the body.  Eating fruit regularly can go a long way in helping your body recover from a long workout or from a very challenging day of playing sports.

Among the many nutrients that are found in fruits, vitamin C is one of the most important ones.  Vitamin C plays a very important role in the growth of the human body.  It is also very important in helping the body repair its muscle tissues.  Vitamin C is used by the body to help heal wounds and other types of muscle injuries that it suffers due to exercise or sports.  Vitamin C also contributes to the maintenance of the teeth and gums.  Vitamin C is usually found in citrus fruits.

Citrus fruits also contain flavonoids in addition to vitamin C.  These flavonoids are phytochemicals that help the body maintain the right levels of pressure in the blood.  They also help the body stay away from many common illnesses by boosting its natural immune system.  Last but not least, flavonoids also help in preventing many different kinds of cancer.

Potassium is another nutrient that can be found in fruits.  Just like flavonoids, the proper amount of potassium in the diet can help the body maintain a very healthy blood pressure level.  A diet rich in potassium can also help in reducing the chances of a person in developing kidney stone while at the same time reducing the risk of losing the integrity of the body’s bone structure.  The best fruits that can be used as sources of potassium are bananas and prunes.  Orange juice, apricots, cantaloupe and dried peaches are also very good sources of potassium.

Folate or Folic Acid is also a beneficial nutrient that anybody can gain from eating the right kind of fruit.  Folate is used by the body during the times when it develops red blood cells for its system.   Folate is most important for women who are already in the child bearing age and for those who are planning to get pregnant.  The right amount of folate in the diet will help reduce the risk of the woman developing illnesses while the baby is developing in her body.

Fruits are also a very good source of dietary fiber.  A healthy diet that includes enough dietary fiber can help bring down the levels of cholesterol in the blood, thus dietary fiber can help in greatly reducing the risk of many different kinds of heart disease.  Furthermore, dietary fiber is also very important in helping the body maintain its regular bowel functions.  Eating fruits will prevent constipation and will reduce diverticulosis.  The fiber in fruits also provides the body very filling meals and snacks without the negative characteristics associated with fat and calories because fruits contain very little amounts of both.  Additionally, fruits contain no cholesterol.
