How to avoid a blood pressure fall

Blood pressure is the force that your blood exerts on the walls of your blood vessels every time your heart beats.  When this force is lower than normal, this means that you have low blood pressure or hypotension.  Having low blood pressure should be avoided because it could lead to damage to some of your vital organs such as the brain and the heart.  Vital organs can easily be damaged if they do not get the right amount of blood flowing through them.  Symptoms of low blood pressure often include dizziness, lightheadedness, and wooziness.

Low blood pressure can be caused by several reasons.  Sometimes, low blood pressure may be caused by drugs and other medication.  Some diuretics can cause the body to experience low blood pressure because they work by eliminating blood and other fluids from the body, thus the volume of blood is decreased which causes the blood pressure to fall down.

At other times, dehydration can cause low blood pressure.  Just like diuretics, when the body is dehydrated due to excessive sweating, vomiting, or even bleeding, the blood pressure tends to go down.  Even conditions such as diarrhea can cause severe dehydration and therefore can cause low blood pressure.

Some people experience low blood pressure when they suddenly move to an upright position after sitting down or squatting for a long period of time.  This is referred to as orthostatic low blood pressure.  The blood pressure of the body drops during this moment because too much blood has accumulated in the lower part of the body and the body cannot move the blood fast enough to adapt to the sudden change of position.  Although this is usually a temporary state of low blood pressure, sometimes it can last long enough to cause some damage.

To avoid low blood pressure then, be sure to always keep yourself well hydrated.  Try to drink the recommended 8 glasses of water everyday.  If you have some difficulty drinking plain water, you can have your favorite fruit juice or tea instead.  Drinking some sports drinks can be a very big help as well.  Make sure you drink even more than your normal consumption during especially hot days or after engaging in strenuous exercise or sports.  These activities are certain to force you to lose a lot of body fluids.  During these times you should replenish your body as best as you can with a lot of fluids so as to help your body keep the blood pressure at normal levels.

You should also avoid taking hot baths or hot showers if you are in danger of low blood pressure.  Avoid staying under the sun for long periods as well.  When you take a hot bath or stay out under the sun on a bright day, your body’s temperature naturally increases due to the heat.  This causes your blood vessels to react to the increase in temperature and will therefore enlarge.  When your blood vessels enlarge the blood flowing through them will not be able to push enough against them and will therefore cause your blood pressure to drop.
